Early Literacy Programs in the Pioneer Valley
Programs That Support Children, Families, and Educators
The Pioneer Valley Early Literacy Consortium offers evidence-based programs that strengthen early reading skills, support families, equip educators, and expand access to books and literacy resources across Western Massachusetts.
Our Story
The Pioneer Valley Early Literacy Consortium was founded in 2003 by a group of concerned educators and community members in Springfield, Massachusetts, who saw that too many children were entering kindergarten without the early literacy skills needed for academic success.
What began as a small, volunteer-led effort to coordinate read-aloud programs has grown into a regional initiative serving families across Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties. Today, PVELC supports more than 12,000 families each year through programs that promote language development, book access, educator learning, and early reading success.
Our work is grounded in the belief that literacy is not only a school issue, but a community one. By connecting education, healthcare, libraries, and civic life, we help create the conditions for more children to become confident, capable readers.
Our Core Values
These values shape how we design programs, support educators, partner with families, and work alongside communities across the Pioneer Valley.
Equity
Every child, regardless of background or zip code, deserves access to high-quality early literacy experiences, resources, and opportunities to succeed.
Evidence-Based Practice
Our programs and trainings are grounded in the Science of Reading and informed by current research in early childhood education and literacy development.
Family Partnership
Parents and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers. We support families with tools, resources, and encouragement to nurture literacy at home.
Collaboration
Lasting change happens when schools, libraries, healthcare providers, and community organizations work together toward shared goals for children and families.
Consortium Members
Pioneer Valley Early Literacy Consortium is a collaborative network of school districts, colleges, and community institutions working together to strengthen early literacy across Western Massachusetts.
